The world's leading advocate of fire prevention and an authoritative source on public safety, NFPA develops, publishes, and disseminates approximately 300 consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks. NFPA membership totals more than 75,000 individuals around the world.

Evac+Chair of North America, manufacturers of Stair Chair Descent Devices (evacuation chairs or evac chair), as well as a complete line of evacuation system devices and peripherals, utilized to assist in the emergency evacuation of people with mobility functional needs from buildings or homes with more than one level. These devices designed and developed by Evac+Chair are being demonstrated at the 2011 NFPA Conference & Expo at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, June 12-14, 2011. Evac+Chair company representatives will explain and demonstrate how each of their devices work.

The demonstration “stage” is 6 foot high, 8 foot by 8 foot platform with a set of stairs for the demonstration of how Stair Chairs function and operate. All visitors will be able to see the stair chair devices in action and talk with the Evac+Chair company representatives and ask any and all questions you might have.

While the NFPA can not endorse any particular manufacturer, NFPA is facilitating these demonstrations to help educate users, assistants, caregivers, building owners and managers and first responders about this evacuation option. You are invited to see, in general, through these demonstrations, how these devices are used and how users and operators can practice transferring into and out of the devices and operating the devices during the descent process.

This invitation for free passes to the Expo hall is being sent to colleges, universities, advocacy organizations, Building Owners and Managers Assoc., hotels and others all over eastern Massachusetts and asking that you bring or invite wheelchair users and anyone else that you or they have contact with to the show to see how these devices work. Education is a huge component of getting folks comfortable with using these devices without fear or uncertainty. It needs to occur before there is a need to use them as training during an emergency is likely to be a poor option.

Although the product line of Evac+Chair is considered emergency evacuation chairs utilized for emergency stairway chair purposes only, the staircase chairs can be utilized for several other real life scenarios as well. Any building and/or private home with a malfunctioning elevator, could easily make use of Evac+Chairs staircase chairs and/or rescue chair. Although the handicapped evacuation chair was utilized and successful during 9/11, these stair chairs can be utilized for any free standing building with more than one floor.

About EVAC+CHAIR North America, LLC
Developed in New York City in 1982, EVAC+CHAIR is the global industry standard for lightweight, portable evacuation chairs. Today the company sells internationally to hotels, hospitals, office buildings, schools, assisted living facilities, and residential and commercial high-rise buildings—any multi-story building where any tenant or occupant who needs help for any reason can get down the stairs to safety. Its narrow profile allows first responders and other building occupants to ascend or descend staircases during an emergency without interference, and its unique design allows most able-bodied users to assist anyone with mobility impairments or other conditions in need of help with relative ease.
